Around 700 families return to N Waziristan
On May 20, 2016, Pakistan Army said it had cleared the last militant stronghold in the country's northwestern tribal area after a three-month long operation.
North Waziristan was once home to the notorious Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and many foreign fighters but militants fled the area after an operation was carried out. The repatriation of temporarily displaced persons took place following clearance by security forces a few months ago.
Pakistan's battle against the Taliban insurgency began in 2004 after the US-led invasion of Afghanistan forced militants to flee across the border. Pakistan Army launched an operation in June 2014 to wipe out militant bases in the tribal regions and bring an end to a bloody insurgency that has cost thousands of civilian lives since 2004.
