Wanted: TTP-Swat commander taken into custody from Karachi

Accused, along with companions, was planning to sabotage the census activity in the city

KARACHI: The Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) of the Sindh police claimed on Saturday to have arrested a militant commander from Karachi.

CTD officials said that the accused, along with his companions, was planning to sabotage the census activity in Karachi.

The accused, identified as Abdul Ahad, son of Syed Hayat, was arrested by CTD investigations during a raid, conducted on a tip-off, near Old Sabzi Mandi area of PIB Colony.

"Ahad was a commander of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) - Swat," said CTD Investigations SP Naveed Khawaja while addressing a press conference at his office. "He [Ahad] had joined TTP-Swat in 2008 and was a resident of Buner, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa."

Sharing details of Ahad's terrorist activities, the officer said the accused and his companions had attacked K-P Education Minister Sardar Hussain Babak in 2011. The minister, however, remained unhurt in the attack while 14 others, including police guards, were wounded in the attack.

Ahad was also involved in bombing Government College, Buner in 2008 and attacking, along with 100 other militants, the Frontier Constabulary check post in Buner where control of the check post was seized till the Zarb-e-Azb operation started.

During the initial course of interrogation, Ahad revealed that a number of militants went into hiding in Afghanistan and Karachi following the Swat operation, Khawaja said, adding that Ahad had also arrived to Karachi after the operation.

"We are now ready to carry out anti-state activities in collaboration with Jamaatul Ahrar and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi," Ahad was quoted as saying.

SP Khawaja said that Ahad's name is included in the most wanted terrorist's list of K-P and he was also declared a proclaimed offender by a court in Buner.

Crackdown: CTD arrest three suspects affiliated with political party

The K-P police have been informed about Ahad's arrest and the suspect will be handed over to the concerned police officials.
