Pakistan to observe 10th Earth Hour today

Switch off unnecessary lights between 8:30pm to 9:30pm today

Pakistan will join 170 countries on Saturday to observe the 10th Earth Hour by switching off unnecessary lights in a pledge to save the planet.

The lights will be switched off between 8:30pm to 9:30pm to coincide with the efforts of World Wide Fund for Nature-Pakistan (WWF-Pakistan).

The event is held towards the end of March worldwide to encourage individuals, households, communities to switch off their lights and thus show their commitment to the planet.

"Switching off unnecessary lights for one hour is a gesture. We should pledge to do everything in our power to reduce our carbon footprint. Our individual actions complement collective efforts for protection of environment," WWF-Pakistan director general Hammad Naqi Khan said. According to him, the country is among the 10 countries worst hit by climate change.



On March 16, the organisation officially inaugurated Earth Hour 2017 at Alliance Francaise de Karachi by unveiling its celebrity ambassadors for the largest volunteer movement across the world. The theme for the current year is 'Shine a Light on Climate Change'.

Earth Hour is the world’s largest grassroots movement to combat climate change. It started from Sydney, Australia, in 2007 and has grown to become a global movement that now involves every continent across the globe.

In 2016, 178 countries and territories participated in Earth Hour celebrations, with more than 400 iconic landmarks switching off lights, cementing Earth Hour’s place as the largest grassroots campaign in history.
