March 19, 2017

Rema Taseer, CEO of the jewellery brand, Rema and a partner, with her sister Myra Qureshi, at their skincare line, Conatural, spill all their secrets and talk about their adventurous childhood — whether it was rollerblading with the neighbours, or unleashing their dogs in cases of emergency, find out all of it here!

What is your first memory of each other?

Myra: The day Rema was born. My mother thought that the best way to get me acquainted and get me to be appreciative of my little sister would be to tell me that she had brought me a present.  So I was given a huge Pink Panther stuffed toy, which was as tall as me. I was pretty chuffed to say the least!

Rema: I remember my first day at Kontiki. I was playing in the sandpit and was most upset about joining school. I practically cried the whole morning! But when Myra came to pick to me up I was thrilled.

What is the craziest thing you have done together?

Myra: There have been too many things, and they are not for public pleasure!

Rema: We have done too much! I can’t even begin to record it.

What did you get punished for the most as a child?

Myra: My immense love for animals! I love animals and I used to bring all sorts of stray kittens indoor. I remember when I was seven years old, there was a man beating up a donkey with a wooden stick outside our gate for no apparent reason. The donkey was crying out in pain, so I unleashed my two German Shepherds. The dogs obviously bit him and ripped his clothes apart. The news travelled to all my neighbours and I got into trouble with my parents, as “there are better ways to deal with these things”. Oops…

Rema: I was very sporty as a child, so I was always screamed at for rollerblading with my neighbours. I remember my parents sat us down and told us that it is forbidden! I also loved playing adventurous games, where I would pretend to be a hunter. I used to climb the walls of my house or hop onto the terrace and jump into the neighbour’s portion…none of it went down well with my parents!

If you could only wear one piece of clothing for the rest of your life, from the others closet, what would it be?

Myra: Rema’s pyjamas. We both have super comfy pyjamas!

Rema: Her track pants.

If you could swap places with each other, what’s the first thing you would do?

Myra: I would buy a new phone protector and cover. Rema’s phone is a perpetual disaster!

Rema: I’d use her cooking skills — she’s a very good cook!

What is the one thing you love about your sister?

Myra: She is extremely grounded and emotionally intelligent. She has a unique gravitas — a way of expressing things in the subtlest yet most powerful manner.

Rema: She has the ability to listen, but she sticks by her guns. She can’t tolerate nonsense and lies, and deals with people in a very strategic yet assertive manner.

If you are fighting with each other, how do you make up?

Myra: There’s never a need to ‘make up’. I just won’t talk to her for a day if I’m annoyed and then everything will be ok.

Rema: We fight, and right after we speak to each other as if we never fought. We work together as well, so something or the other forces us to talk no matter how annoyed we are at one another.

What is the one secret talent your sister has, that you wish you had too?

Myra: She looks good in everything she wears. You could give her something that wouldn’t suit anyone in the whole world, but she’ll rock it!

Rema: She is very dedicated and is a go-getter. If she sets her mind to something — it will be done. She has the fantastic ability to balance everything.

Describe your sister in three words:

Myra: Grounded, loving and goofy.

Rema: Caring, well-balanced, loving.

Which fictional character is your sister most like?

Myra: Much like Pocahontas, Rema is a noble, beautiful, free-spirited and a highly spiritual young woman who loves adventure and nature. She has wisdom beyond her years, and offers kindness and guidance to all those around her.

Rema: Myra reminds me of Mulan: strong, independent, brave, heroic and the hero of her story. She is extremely strong and courageous, but she is also loving and full of emotion. She always believes in doing the right thing!

How are your personalities similar?

Myra: We are very driven, honest and trustworthy.

Rema: We believe in love and kindness.

I can’t live without my sister because…

Myra: We are bonded together under a pack code. We know one another’s faults, virtues, catastrophes, mortifications, triumphs, desires, and how long the other can go without food, water and the toilet!

Rema: We are always by each other’s side. We share every moment together, whether it is in our work or personal lives.
