Sadiq for regular interaction between MPs from India, Pakistan

NA speaker meets Indian delegation led by Shashi Tharoor in Islamabad

Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq has said that elected representatives of both India and Pakistan have a responsibility to build strong and meaningful relations between the two neighbouring countries.

He expressed these views in a meeting with the Indian parliamentary delegation, which is in Pakistan to attend the Asian Parliament Assembly, led by Shashi Tharoor. Member Lok Sabha Meenakshi Lekh and member Rajya Sabha Swapan Dasgupta were also part of the meeting.

“Both the sides met in an atmosphere of mutual cordiality, discussing a variety of issues, affecting the relations between the parliaments of the two countries,” a statement issued by the National Assembly Secretariat said.

Sadiq said dialogue and interaction between both the countries must be directed towards peace in the region.



He, according to the communiqué, called for regular interaction between parliamentarians of Pakistan and India for enhancing bilateral cooperation between the two parliaments.

“He stressed for exploring possibilities of joint collaboration between NA and Lok Sabha in legislative drafting, rules of business and other parliamentary practices,” it said.

Tharoor said parliamentary diplomacy was an excellent way of bringing the two nations closer.

The Indian delegation agreed for regular interaction between parliamentarians, and discussed the working of standing committees, especially the public accounts committee, deciding “to mutually share the experiences and practices”.
