ISLAMABAD: A sessions court Monday dismissed an appeal filed by a former inspector general of Islamabad Police and upheld the decision of a lower court which had ruled in favour of the Gun and Country Club over the police official’s club membership.

Former IGP Tahir Alam Khan, who remained the capital’s top cop from September 2014 until his retirement in January 2016, was awarded an honorary membership of the club in 2011. He continued enjoying perks of the honorary membership even after his retirement.

IGP draws court, minister’s ire

Last May, the club told him that he was only entitled to the honorary membership during the course of his service and if he wished to continue enjoying the club’s facilities, he would have to pay to convert his honorary membership into a permanent one.

However, Khan challenged the club’s decision in a civil court maintaining that when he was awarded the membership, he was informed that it was permanent.

He filed a suit in the court of Civil Judge Mubashir Hasan contending that he had been paying charges of the club since he received its membership and that cancellation of his membership by the club was illegal.

The club management, while contesting the suit, maintained that Khan was entitled to the perks of an honorary membership during the course of his service. Following the arguments, the court last month dismissed Khan’s plea and ruled in favour of the club.

The former top cop, however, filed another suit in the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Pervaizul Qadir Memon seeking suspension of the civil court’s order and a restraining order for the club management.

On Monday, the court dismissed Khan’s plea after hearing arguments of both the parties.
