ISLAMABAD: In an unusual move, police have arrested one of their own for allegedly robbing six people at gunpoint at an office in Blue Area.

He was produced before a magistrate who approved his three-day physical remand.

Kohsar police arrested assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Ahmed Usman and his accomplice Irfan from Golra late on Wednesday night.

Police said the two had allegedly looted Rs90,000 in cash, four mobile phones and two laptops from an office in Blue Area on Tuesday.

The armed robbery took place at around 10am in the morning. Kohsar police had registered a case against two unidentified robbers.

Reviewing the closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from the office later in the day, police managed to identify the suspects. To their shock, they discovered that one of the robbers was a police officer.

The two were tracked down and arrested from Golra area on Wednesday night.

Usman had been working as an ASI in the capital police and had been posted at Police Lines.

Both suspects were produced before a judicial magistrate on Thursday and were given into police custody for three days.

An investigation officer confided that both suspects were drug addicts. Moreover, he said that some of the valuables stolen from the Blue Area office had also been recovered from the suspects.

A police spokesperson said that senior officials had appreciated Kohsar SHO Inspector Iftikhar Chatha for arresting the suspects.
