Bt Cotton Varieties: PSC approves general cultivation

MULTAN: Three new Bt cotton varieties developed by scientists of Central Cotton Research Institute in Multan have been approved by Punjab Seed Council (PSC) for general cultivation in the province. However, the approval was granted subject to certification by National Bio-Safety Commission in the 48th meeting of PSC attended by agriculture scientists from all over the country. The three varieties were high yielding ones, with good quality lint and resistance against Cotton Leaf Curl Virus. Pakistan Central Cotton Committee Vice President Dr Khalid Abdullah congratulated the scientists on the approval and expressed the hope that they would continue to develop more cotton varieties of good characteristics. He also advised farmers to bring some area under cultivation of non-Bt varieties so that pests do not develop resistance against the Bt varieties.
