Last Year: Dozen G-B journalists threatened

HRCP urges the government to ensure conducive working environment in a region where journalism is still in its infancy

GILGIT: Around 17 media personnel in Gilgit-Baltistan received death threats from various state and non-state actors last year. The was stated by Israruddin Israr, coordinator for the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) in Gilgit on Sunday while addressing a seminar on the death anniversary of journalist Raja Hussain Khan. “These threats came from non-state actors, politicians, police and other law enforcement agencies,” Israr claimed, adding some incidents of torture had also been reported. He urged the government to ensure a conducive working environment in a region where journalism is still in its infancy.
