30 Afghan, Uzbek foreigners among 70 detained across Karachi

Weapons and narcotics also recovered from possession of detained men

KARACHI: A suspected street criminal was killed while nearly 70 other suspects, including illegal immigrants, were detained during ongoing targeted raids and operations in different parts of the metropolis on Sunday.
As many as 70 suspects were taken into custody during ongoing targeted raids and operations in different parts of the city. Nearly 30 foreigners belonging to Afghanistan and Uzbekistan were also among the detainees. The raids and operations were conducted by the police in various parts of the city, including New Karachi, Gulberg, Taimuria, Jauharabad, Shershah, Hyderi, Gabol Town and Malir. Weapons and narcotics were also recovered from the possession of the detained men.

The suspects were shifted to undisclosed locations for further questioning. The illegal immigrants belonged to Afghanistan, Uzbekistan and Bangladesh, said Gulberg division SP Bashir Brohi. Cases were also registered against them while further investigation is underway.
Meanwhile, a suspected robber was killed during an exchange of fire with the police in Mominabad locality of Orangi Town. Police officials said the suspect, along with his companion, was looting passers-by at gunpoint when police personnel on routine patrolling reached the site.

An encounter took place when the robbers opened fire at the police and tried to escape instead of surrendering themselves, said the police, adding the officers fired in retaliation and killed one of the suspects.
Police also claimed to have recovered a pistol from his possession. The body was shifted to the Edhi morgue in Sohrab Goth for identification after medico-legal formalities were completed at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.
