KGS overshadows other schools as CIE announces results

Karachi's top school bags 29 awards across five different categories

KARACHI: Karachi Grammar School (KGS) dominated the list of high achievers as Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) announced the winners of their learners' awards.

The winners for five categories — Top in Pakistan, Best Across Award, Top in Sindh and Balochistan, High Achievement and Top in the World — were chosen from the students who took the exams in June 2016.

Cambridge results: Record setting year for Pakistanis

Over 85 learners in Sindh and Balochistan will receive awards for exceptional performance in the Cambridge examinations, including 19 learners who achieved the highest marks in the world and 30 who attained the highest marks in Pakistan.

From the students who received awards for their exceptional performance, 29 awards in all categories were bagged by students from KGS, followed by Beaconhouse School System (BSS), St Patrick's High School, Foundation Public School, The Generation's School and The Lyceum School.

Around 11 students received highest marks in Pakistan in a single subject, while 23 Best Across awards were handed out to the students from Sindh and Balochistan. Three students were also awarded high achievers awards, all of whom were from KGS.

The City School won two awards, while BSS, St Patrick's and The Generation's School won four each.

KGS tops list of outstanding Cambridge learners

CIE Pakistan's country director Uzma Yousuf said that she is very proud of the achievements of Cambridge students. "I would also like to congratulate all the teachers who have worked so hard to help you achieve such success, and your parents who supported you," she said, in statement. Cambridge qualifications open up so many opportunities in life, she said, adding that she wished all the best to the students as they take their next steps.

Hasnain Eqbal | 7 years ago | Reply Look, the core point is, during the exam, the student should understand what is being asked and what answer the examiner is expecting from him...This is the key to success....If this understanding is achieved, then comes the matter, how well a student prepare for the examinations.... Students who understand the technique, got higher grades, straight away... This again depends on one thing... The questions are in English...Students having good skill in English language perform better... My advice to those Students, who did not perform well, should take maximum number of English Comprehension tests and got them assessed through their English teachers, tutors.. This will increase their ability to understand what is being asked...and what they have to write in the answer sheet... However, I do agree that, there is a big role of private tutors in getting the grades....

While I have always been very critical of Grammar and its culture and the people there, it is undoubtedly true, for me, that Grammar teachers taught more than any other school. I never took tutions in my life but everyone I know took one subject or another for tutions so your argument that Grammarians take more tutions is untrue, while reasonable to assume. I think you can criticize Grammar for a lot but not for the achievements of the students. The students excel in school and in life and it is because of the culture of achievement being honored and respected there that fuels this. With that, let me just think about how I defended Grammar when all I have done is criticize it since I left Grammar 15 years ago :)

boomerang | 7 years ago | Reply @Shahzeb: This is not true. Students in schools like KGS, LGS, Beaconhouse etc are usually self made and have the sense to self study. Those who take tuition are on survival mode as they bunk classes in school and try to make up in tuition. Or perhaps the credit goes to the insincere teachers who don't focus on teaching at these schools and call students for tuition in the evening.

Shahzeb | 7 years ago | Reply Well to be really honest the credit for this goes to taking private tuitions. KGS students are usually the ones who take more tuitions than any other students. It's not the school who should get the credit for this but the students who actually spend more hours and more money on these tuitions to achieve better results because they are all placed in a very competitive environment.

cie | 7 years ago | Reply most schools offer london univ O and A levels in Pakistan and not CIE. Thus topping cie results is a gimmik. you will win if you're the only player.
