117th annual sports event: 6,000 students vying for trophies

LAHORE:
The three-day 117th Annual Sports of the Government College University (GCU) Lahore began after an inaugural ceremony held at the university’s Oval Ground on Thursday.

Around 6,000 students from 30 departments of the university are participating in the annual sports. The inaugural ceremony was marked by a one-minute silence for the martyrs of Lahore blast.

GCU athletes, led by Ghulam Qadir who represented Pakistan at Common walth Games 2014, took oath to take part in the games while abiding by the rules and in the true spirit of sportsmanship for the glory of sports and the honour of their teams.

The engineering department bagged the prestigious trophy of the Best March Past Contingent, while the Department of Political Science stood second.


In his message, Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Hassan Amir Shah said sports and co-curricular activities were as important as academics for the overall grooming and personality development of students.

Lauding the participation of girl students in sports, the VC said for the first time a female athlete has led the march past at the annual sports.

He also appreciated the participation of physically-challenged students in the event and directed the sports directorate to provide maximum opportunities and facilities to them.
