China opposes US move to blacklist JEM chief

Proposal, which was finalised after consultations between Washington and New Delhi was opposed by Beijing

China opposed a proposal by the US in the United Nations to ban Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) chief Masood Azhar, Times of India reported on Tuesday.

The US, supported by the UK and France, moved a proposal to designate Masood Azhar as a global terrorist at the Sanctions Committee of the UN Security Council.

The proposal, which was finalised after consultations between Washington and New Delhi was opposed by Beijing.

India has accused the JeM and its leader of masterminding several attacks, including the assault on the Pathankot air base in January 2016. Security officials interrogated Azhar and his associates after the attack, and said they found no evidence linking him to it.

Jaish-e-Mohammad has already been blacklisted by the 15-nation Security Council, but not Azhar.

China opposed the US move by putting a hold on the proposal. The hold remains for six months and can be further extended by three months. During this period, it can be anytime converted into a block, thereby, ending the life of the proposal.

Reacting to China’s move to block the ban proposal, India’s foreign ministry said, “We’ve been informed of this development and the matter has been taken up with the Chinese government.”

Beijing had earlier blocked India’s request in December to add Azhar to UN Security Council blacklist of groups linked to al Qaeda.

harkol | 7 years ago | Reply China+Pak+NorthKorea = New USSR US+India+Europe+Australia+Japan = New NATO Arabs will be split between China & US. Question is which way Russia will go. Outcome is a foregone conclusion. China is overstretching. It has way too less per capita income than even erstwhile USSR (and resources) to be able to sustain an arms race with developed world.

Ravian | 7 years ago | Reply China knows how to play its cards. On China's "advice" Pakistan has banned Hafiz Saeed. Soon we shall see a similar step for Masood Azhar, much to the chagrin of India.

rich | 7 years ago | Reply for my pakistani brothers who are delighted with chinese blocking the ban let me say a few words most are happy bec the hafeez is not declared terrorist not blacklisted ect ect as per india wishes assuming he was blaclisted what is the benefit for india other the he would not be able to travel, collect monet ect and then its over but now we can say see china too is helping terrorist, and we are suffering ect and all problems in kashmir is bec of that ect ect we can get immense milage from it and we are so win win for us ban him or dont ban him

mohit | 7 years ago | Reply Indian govt must put excessive pressure on China by the economic blockade on the issue of support to Azhar and Pakistan. China and Pakistan must be declared as terrorist countries who are supporting terrorists and are forcing proxy war on India. Modi govt must take measures to restrict the flow of Chinese goods in India. Otherwise, India will also face a situation like US who is facing a serious threat from Chinese because US market is full of Chinese goods and all US industries are closed due to the flow of cheap and bad quality goods. India will face similar situation resulted in the closure of all industries which will create serious unemployment problem which will destroy the family equilibrium of this country. This fact is not visualized by corrupt politicians of India sitting in power who are only recklessly looting this country and are creating huge problems for people in future.
