ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani has directed the establishment division to frame rules for the promotion of bureaucrats to the post of secretary of a ministry in BS-22 in light of Supreme Court orders.

The apex court bench last month demoted from BS-22 to 21 more than 50 bureaucrats Gilani promoted last year ignoring their seniority. According to a handout statement issued here on Thursday, Gilani directed the secretary establishment division to frame rules afresh in compliance with the Supreme Court’s April 28 verdict. While reviewing the progress of implementation of these orders in a meeting with the secretary, the premier advised that rules must ensure fairness and justness of the entire process of promotion.

He added the promotion process be started as early as possible after approval of the rules in consultation with the Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC) and ministry of law and justice division. He also stated that there were no favourites and that selections shall be made strictly on merit in accordance with the rules and relevant law.
