The need for constructing a new state-of-the art airport for Islamabad has been felt for quite some time as the existing one is unable to meet growing requirements of passengers and cargo, said President Asif Ali Zardari.

These remarks were made at a briefing held in the presidency to review the progress on the new Benazir Bhutto International Airport Islamabad project. The briefing was given by Acting Director General Civil Aviation Authority AVM Riazul Haq.

On the occasion, Farhatullah Babar said they were informed that the Benazir Bhutto International Airport will be become operational by June 2013 when tests runs
will begin.

He said the president, during meeting, reiterated the commitment to improve the country’s communication infrastructure, be it rail, roads, ports or the airports.

Keeping in view that militants strike such public places, the president has ordered for better security arrangements for the airport, said Babar.
