Breaking the Silence is an account of a mother who wants a better future for her child. The film revolves around the life of a unemployed single mother of a child with special needs who must make it in life. It showcases her resilience and fortitude and how to endure life when the going gets rough.
While glamour and gloss are prerequisites in the film world more than anywhere else, however Gong Li did not wear any make up to bring conviction to her difficult role. One sees her crying, and laughing, a victim of circumstances beyond her control.
The Chinese film, produced in 2000, was directed by Sun Zhou. It premiered internationally at the 2000 Berlin International Film Festival. Later it became China’s submission to the 73rd Academy awards in the best foreign language film category.
Earlier, Lok Virsa Executive Director Dr Fouzia Saeed said that the film club organises screenings of selected local and international films at its media centre.
“The film [Breaking the Silence] was one of three films voted as best picture at the 2001 Hundred Flowers Awards and is worth watching especially for our friends from China,” Dr Saeed remarked.
