KARACHI:

The power crisis in the country demands concerted efforts from both the government and the private sector, and there is a need to rely more on local experts who have homegrown solutions, according to Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineers of Pakistan (IEEEP) Chairman Tahir Saleem.

Speaking to the media here on Thursday, Saleem said, “Unfortunately, our government consults non-technical people to devise policies for the power sector, rather than those with technical expertise.”

“Our energy consumption is increasing by almost 12 per cent annually, which a big challenge for us. Pakistan can still save up to 30 per cent power by implementing energy conservation measures,” he added.

He said IEEEP will hold its 26th international multi-topic seminar in Karachi on March 16 and 17. More than 500 delegates are expected to participate in the event, which will focus on solar energy, wind power and green buildings, among others.
