KANDY:

Pakistan’s thrashing against New Zealand on Tuesday has handed plenty of hope to Zimbabwe who aim to ride the loss of confidence and cause an upset when they meet the former champions on Monday.

Zimbabwe have lost 36 of the 40 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) played between the two sides, the last of which sealed a 5-0 series whitewash in Sheikhupura three years ago. However, Pakistan’s mediocre batting in the tournament and Zimbabwe’s ability to produce short bursts of thrills have left their captain optimistic.

“If we improve our batting and not lose quick wickets, I back my bowlers to defend a score in excess of 260 against Pakistan,” said Elton Chigumbura.

Zimbabwe will take heart from Canada’s bowling effort against the former champions who shot out Pakistan for a paltry 184 before Shahid Afridi averted a disaster.

“When we play against a better team, they always expect to win the match. For us, we go into the game with the sole aim of winning and we play our best cricket.”

Zimbabwe last beat Pakistan in Sheikhupura 13 years ago but given Pakistan’s performance in the last two World Cups, an upset can never be ruled out. With facts on hand, Chigumbura has urged his players not to fear the opposition and take inspiration from Ireland who shocked England while chasing 328.

“It all depends on how much you want it. The players believe in themselves and will enter the field with the aim of winning. We won’t be giving up as Ireland’s win over England has shown that it’s not over until it’s over.”
