MULTAN: According to historians, in the 18th century when the British ruled the subcontinent, the shrine of Bahauddin Zakariya was damaged as part of a conspiracy to refrain Muslims and other people from visiting the mausoleum. The British considered the shrine a place that helped Muslims gain emotional power and a sense of feeling to fight for religion and spread the teachings of Sufi saints.

However, the action on part of the British rulers resulted in counter effects not only on Muslims but Sikh, Buddhists and Christian community. The shrine was soon reconstructed and restored to its past glory.
