LAHORE:

Pakistan Electric Power Company (Pepco) has planned to spend Rs4.33 billion this fiscal year to cover line losses by re-conducting and installing new electricity wires, according to Pepco Managing Director Muhammad Khalid.

In a press briefing on Tuesday, Khalid said that till January 2011, Pepco had already spent Rs1.79 billion for the purpose. He said that 1,235-kilometre-long new 11 KV high transmission (HT) electricity wires have been installed. Pepco has also re-conducted 444-km-long wires.

Approximately, 532 km of new low transmission (LT) lines of 400 volts have also been installed till now, whereas 307 km of LT lines have been re-conducted.

Khalid said that Pepco has added 3,107 new transformers this fiscal year, whereas 271,741 electricity meters have been replaced at a cost of Rs515 million.

Last year, Rs4.84 billion had been allocated for the same cause, as Pepco added new 1,576 km long HT lines and 1,011 km long LT lines, along with 3,784 new transformers and 562,243 replaced meters.

He further said that Pepco consumers would get some relief as 423 megawatts of hydel electricity and 1,183 megawatts from independent power producers will be added to the system before summer.

Khalid hoped that these steps would help Pepco ensure maximum uninterrupted power supply to consumers during the summer. He said that by overcoming these line losses, transformers would be less affected.
