KARACHI: The police and Rangers claimed to have arrested nearly half a dozen suspects, including the chief of a team of target killers on Tuesday.

The Tipu Sultan police said that the accused, Azad Azeemuddin, was arrested after an exchange of fire with the police at Tipu Sultan Road. A Kalashnikov and a TT pistol were also recovered from his possession, according to a press statement issued by the Tipu Sultan police station on Tuesday.

During the initial course of interrogation, Azeemuddin revealed that he used to head two commanders of the militant wing of a political party in Orangi Town. The commanders, Alauddin alias Kala Pappu and Ghulam Rabbani alias Firon, were arrested earlier.

The commanders were supervising 32 target killers and the teams have been involved in at least 15 cases of targeted killings and a number of cases of extortion and other criminal activities, said Azeemuddin.

A case was registered and further investigation is underway.

Five criminals were arrested during the raids, confirmed the Rangers spokesperson, adding that arms and ammunitions were also recovered from their possession.
