QUETTA: A new case of the crippling polio virus was confirmed in Balochistan's Chaman district on Tuesday, said Coordinator Emergency Operation Centre (EOC).

The virus was confirmed in a four-month-old boy in Mehmoodabad area of Chaman district, Killa Abdullah.

According to the parents, the child developed constant high fever and constipation with the samples later confirming the disease. The samples had been taken in the last week of December from Chaman, which came positive on Tuesday.

Polio Eradication: Action ordered against negligent officials

There were as many as two cases of the virus in the province during 2016 with the first case emerging in the second month of the preceding year. In total, around 20 cases of the crippling disease were reported in the country in 2016.

On Saturday, officials overseeing the polio eradication campaign called for measures to address weak areas of the immunisation drive as eight polio cases surfaced in Sindh last year.

MNA Azra Fazal Pechuho instructed the authorities to take action against lady health workers (LHWs) found to be negligent in their duties as well as the officers who avoid action against LHWs.

On the other hand, Punjab Minister for Specialised Healthcare and Medical Education Khawaja Salman Rafique termed 2016 a successful year for the health sector as Punjab remained polio free.
