If the country had a proper national registry of prevalent diseases, it will be easier to control them.
These views were shared by experts at the 8th biennial conference of the Pakistan Society of Nephrology on Friday. The moot was based on finding a strategy to prevent chronic renal diseases, also known as chronic kidney diseases.
A proper database will help develop an efficient, prevention-oriented strategy for the population, said the nephrology society’s life patron, Prof Jaffer Naqvi.
He added that diabetes and hypertension need to be controlled first as they are the main causes of end-stage renal failure. Early and effective treatment of both diseases by less expensive, local drugs will not only decrease the country’s financial burden but will also delay the progression of the disease. Nephrology society president Prof Fazal Akhtar warned that the number of patients suffering from chronic renal disease is increasing every year. “The society needs to be educated for preventive measures,” he said.
Senior nephrologist Dr Murli Dhar emphasised on the role of family physicians as they can educate the masses at their door steps. Kidney diseases can be reduced if medicines were available at lower prices, he added.
During the inaugural session, Human Rights Commission of Pakistan secretary-general IA Rahman gave an elaborate presentation on human rights situation in Pakistan. He emphasised on the importance of the concept of equal rights for men and women, workers and employers.
