The demolition occurred after the shop owners failed to pay Municipal Utility Charges and Tax (MUCT) after repeated deadlines.
MUCT senior director Raza Rizvi told The Express Tribune the operation will continue on Monday. "There are around 200 furniture shops in the area, out of which 25% have been partially damaged," he said, adding that the defaulters have to pay arrears worth Rs7 million to KMC. Three KMC employees got injured due to the backlash from shopkeepers in the operation.
