More than 26 countries are competing in the five-day event which comprises participants aged under-15. Haq Nawaz, Waqas Azam, Ziaur Rehman and Ameer Shah are representing Pakistan in the Slalom and Giant Slalom events of the championship.
The skiers, who have been trained in the Naltar skiing school, were selected by the SFP after thorough trials in December. Since the trials, Pakistan Air Force coach Shahid Nadeem has been training them.
“We want our children to have the exposure and that is the reason why we’ve sent them to the event,” the SFP Secretary Air Commodore Mussarat Ali told The Express Tribune. “We don’t expect them to win against Japan, China or even India because our children don’t have the appropriate infrastructure. They practice on just one slope.”
However, team coach Nadeem felt that 14-year-old Rehman has the potential to finish in the top 20.
