ISLAMABAD: Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) has approved the elevation of Peshawar High Court (PHC) Chief Justice Mazhar Alam Mandokhel as a Supreme Court judge and Justice Yahya Afridi as the new chief justice for PHC.

The commission’s meeting was held on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Chief Justice of Pakistan Anwar Zaheer Jamali regarding the elevation of PHC’s CJ in the apex court. It was CJP’s last meeting as chairman JCP.

Sources told The Express Tribune that the commission unanimously approved the elevation of PHC CJ. Presently, one permanent seat of judge is vacant.

CJ Mazhar Alam Mandokhel is also heading the special tribunal, which is trying former military ruler Pervez Musharraf.

Interestingly, incoming chief justice Saqib Nisar has very limited space regarding the appointment of superior court judges during his tenure as very few vacancies of judges are vacant in the high courts.
