PESHAWAR: The Fata Students Organization (FSO) protested against the arrest of its president Shaukat Afzal and demanded his immediate release.

The student also started a sit-in in front of the Peshawar Press Club, till the release of the student leader. They are being led by the senior adviser of FSO Halim Orakzai.

The protesters were chanting slogans against the Deputy Commissioner Peshawar Riaz Khan Mehsood and the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf-led provincial government.

Orakzai, while talking to The Express Tribune at the sit-in camp, said that Afzal was arrested for chanting slogans against the draconian Frontier Crimes Regulation (FCR) in Fata at a function in Peshawar the other day.

He accused Peshawar’s DC of making arrangements with the political administration by illegally detaining Afzal, as they are the ones getting benefits from the FCR while the general public was being harassed through it.

He vowed that the campaign for the abolition of the FCR will continue and added that they will not be deterred by illegal arrests.

He added that the sit-in will continue till the release of the innocent student leader, who is always striving for the rights of Fata’s people and youth.

It is pertinent to mention here that Afzal was arrested on Friday from the premises of DC’s office.

The DC on Friday told The Express Tribune, that Afzal was arrested tor threatening a man named Sajidullah and he requested the DC for protection. The protesters rejected the DC’s claims and alleged that the DC had arrested the student leader just for his stance against the FCR.
