The purpose of the project is to establish and refine existing process of disaster management.

PESHAWAR: The eighth National Disaster Management Exhibition was inaugurated at the University of Peshawar on Wednesday by the institution’s Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Rasul Jan.

The two-day-long fair was organised by the Centre for Disaster Preparedness and Management volunteer club in collaboration with PDMA-Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, UNDP, ACF International (Action against Hunger), Handicap International, ActionAid and The NGO World Foundation.

As many as 54 stalls displayed their wares at the exhibition in the university’s Sheikh Muhammad Taimur Academic Block.

The VC was briefed by representatives of various NGOs working on disaster management and climate change.

Highlighting Pakistan’s vulnerability to natural and manmade disasters, Dr Jan said it was imperative to equip trained disaster management professionals to minimise the damage.

Many public and private sector organisations, he said, had been set up to manage calamities after a devastating earthquake hit Azad Kashmir and adjoining areas in 2005. However, lack of trained professionals meant ideal results could not be achieved, he said, adding that the university had established the Centre for Disaster Preparedness and Management to mitigate manpower shortage in this connection.

The VC said no nation could live in isolation forever and neither could it rely permanently on external help. “All of us need to learn about risks and mechanisms to mitigate and withstand the impacts.”

He appreciated the activities organized by the CDPM’s volunteer club.

Prof Dr Amir Nawaz Khan said the centre was supplying 100 professionals to the field of disaster management every year.

As many as 200 schools, 70 colleges and 30 universities of K-P are participating.
