LAHORE: Technological progress has brought a revolution in the world with global industrialisation and has uplifted the economy and social well-being of the public, and the same is needed in Pakistan, said Rana Tanveer Hussain.
The science and technology minister was speaking at a two-day International Conference on Advanced Materials and Emerging Technologies 2016 (ICAMET 2016) on Monday organised by the University of Engineering and Technology’s (UET) Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Department in collaboration with the Higher Education Commission (HEC), the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited and the Punjab University.
Addressing the participants, the minister said the government was determined to encourage and facilitate rapid industrialisation in Pakistan. “Several incentives for the industry and foreign investors have already been announced,” he said. “Many projects are under way to cope with the energy crisis plaguing the country.”
Tanveer said the scope of material engineering was unlimited and had led to a significant increase in the research and development work in the industrial world. Therefore, there is opportunity to explore this sector extensively for boosting up the economy, he added.
UET Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Fazal Ahmad Khalid, in his keynote speech, said material sciences and engineering played a pivotal role in bringing about transformation in society because engineering starts with material. “Translation of research into processes is a big task and can be achieved with collaboration and expertise of each other,” he said, adding research papers and patents are the major outcomes of any institute and UET has been focusing on this task.
UET Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Chairperson Prof Dr Akhlaq Ahmad Malik briefed the audience about the conference, its objectives, schedule and other proceedings. He said the purpose of the moot was to become an umbrella to cooperate and work jointly and implement collaborative for goals-oriented research and training in their respective fields of specialisation.
