ABBOTTABAD: With the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government coming under fire recently in the Abbottabad region for faulty educational reforms, the province’s chief minister on Saturday argued that his administration was trying to revamp the education system in such a way that it would prepare students for the real world, broaden their narrow vision and even counter extremism.

K-P Chief Minister Pervez Khattak said this while addressing the Annual Parents Day and Prize Distribution Ceremony at  the Abbottabad Public School (APS) on Saturday.

Khattak said that the modern era poses unprecedented, daunting challenges in every sphere of life. It is for this purpose, he said, the K-P government was transforming dynamics of education in the province.

He added that the education system was being reformed in such a way which would enable educational institutions to become the focal point in helping students fight against the evils of society, particularly extremist views and misconceptions in religion.

For this, he said, the vision of students would need to be enhanced beyond their current narrow scope so that they can analyse events happening around them objectively and play their due role in the development of a prosperous society.

In this regard, Khattak emphasised the role teachers have to play in guiding students and carefully exposing them to the realities of life without prejudice.

Khattak’s education policies had come under fire recently with government schools in nearby Haripur receiving faulty math books almost six months after the term began.

APS Principal Brigadier (retired) Javed Ahmed presented an annual report of the school, highlighting its performances, activities, achievements and future plans. Students also performed tableaus.

Referring to the demands made by Brigadier (retd) Ahmed, Khattak announced that he would approve the construction of an auditorium for the school along with facilities for a gymnasium, squash court, indoor games and staff club, construction of two hostels, replacing three buses, renovation of staff residencies, construction of new residences, reconstruction of the swimming pool and a bonus for the staff.

Khattak also appreciated the school’s performance, noting that it demonstrates it has excellent infrastructure and competent faculty.

Members of the provincial cabinet including Qalander Khan Lodhi, Abdul Haq Khan, MNA Dr Muhammad Azhar Jadoon, MPA and Chairman DDAC Abbottabad Sardar Muhammad Idrees, among others attended the ceremony.
