Array of emotions: Artist traces tender hues of human relationships

Sumera Jawad explains how the rose has lost its impact today

KARACHI/ DESIGN: RANA SAIF: Artist Sumera Jawad brings to the forefront the ethos of human relationships in her latest exhibition, titled 'Insinuation'.

"Basically, insinuation means gaining favour through artful means. But if you venture deep into these thoughts, it's all relates to human relationships," she said while speaking to The Express Tribune. Using the medium of oil on canvas, she portrays different shades people go through in their relationships, and juxtaposes them with her views on life.

Talking about the imagery of roses in her works, she remarked, "These scant images highlight that a flower like rose has also lost its strong impact because it is presented every day to the [lover] in a relationship."

Jawad believes that she portrayed her thoughts while stressing on relationships because, "after gaining material possessions, we seek immaterial relationships to foster love and care." This is why the prime focus of this specific collection is on human relationships, she added.



Jawad has been painting for the last 30 years and this is her 10th solo show. She completed her doctorate in studio practice from Punjab University. With her consecutive themes focusing on issues of women, she said, "My self-experience has evolved overtime." When I was completing my doctorate, I was essentially experimenting with female-centric topics but now my work is more conceptual, she added.

The exhibition continues till December 1 at Artscene Galleries.
