ISLAMABAD: Around 200 young doctors on Thursday staged a sit-in outside Benazir Bhutto Hospital to protest suspension of three of their colleagues from District Headquarters Hospital Rawalpindi (DHQ).

Led by Young Doctors Association (YDA) President Dr Muhammad Haroon, young doctors of Rawalpindi Allied Hospitals - Benazir Bhutto Hospital (BBH), Holy Family Hospital (HFH) and DHQ - parked two buses of Rawalpindi Medical College on one of Murree Road’s lanes, blocking the traffic’s flow.

Holding placards and banners inscribed with their demands, the doctors chanted slogans against Punjab health department and DHQ administration.

The doctors were protesting against the suspension of Senior Registrar Dr Faryal Azhar and two trainee doctors, Shafiq Omer and Bashirur Rehman, from DHQ hospital.

The three officials were suspended after a patient, Imran, filed a complaint against them on January 28 for failing to provide him adequate healthcare.

The protesting doctors argued that the three doctors were suspended before the inquiry committee could prove the allegations.

The protest was called off when they were assured the demonstrators that the three doctors will be reinstated till the inquiry committee makes a final decision.

The HFH administration, however, kept issuing number receipts to patients, each costing Rs10, even though there were very few doctors on duty. The patients kept waiting for long hours only to find that there were no doctors to facilitate them and the outpatient departments had been closed.
