FAISALABAD: An under-trial prisoner was killed in a police shootout after killing a police officer in Faisalabad on Wednesday.

A police official said ASI Shabbir Zia of Sitiana police station was bringing accused Abrar to central jail after producing him in a court in Jaranwala when the accused snatched pistol from the police official and shot him dead and fled the scene.

On receiving information, City Police Officer Afzaal Kausar constituted a special police team comprising SP Jaranwala, SHO Khurarianwala SI Muhammad Arshad, SHO City Jaranwala Inspector Muhammad Younus and others to arrest the accused.

On a tip-off, the police team raided a sugarcane field to arrest Abrar. However, Abrar opened fire on the police.

The police retaliated killing the accused on the spot.

The body was shifted to the hospital for legal formalities.
