80-year-old model breaks stereotypes with runway swagger

Wang Deshun, an internet sensation and 80-year-old grandfather, is proving designers worldwide wrong for not featuring older models in their runway shows.

After becoming the subject for a YouTube video 'Be the fiercest', with over 300,000 views since August, China’s 'hottest grandpa' received a lot of admiration and support worldwide for breaking stereotypes in the fashion industry.



Being an actor and artist from China, Deshun says he aims to defy the aging process by experimenting with new things and focusing on staying fit. According to a recent feature in the New York Times, Deshun described that his schedule included intense work-out of three hours per day. "It’s about your state of mind. It’s not about age," he told The New York Times.

"Nature determines age, but you determine your state of mind."

His modeling career was launched at the China Fashion Week last year and earned him the title of a national icon. He had taught modeling and organised fashion shows in his earlier days, however, it was not until last year that he decided to become a sensation and break stereotypes by walking the runway.

Deshun says the key to succeeding in fashion ― or anything, for that matter ― is choosing a goal and never giving up.
