Tribute: Show must go on

Unknown script by Swedish director Ingmar Bergman to be turned into film.

A previously unknown script written by late Swedish film-maker Ingmar Bergman for collaboration with Italy’s Federico Fellini and Japan’s Akira Kurosawa, is being turned into a movie by another Swedish director Suzanne Osten, reported Reuters.

The script, titled Sixty-four minutes with Rebecka, was written back in 1969 but the collaboration between the three legendary directors fell through. The script was shelved until the early 2000s, when Bergman donated his collection to a foundation set up to preserve and honour his work.

Many of Bergman’s scripts were never filmed but Sixty-four Minutes with Rebecka had remained unknown even for the most confirmed of connoisseurs, according to the Bergman Institute.

The script is slated to premiere as a radio play on November 6, before filming for it commences. Sixty-four Minutes with Rebecka will, as per plan, premiere in 2018, 100 years after Bergman’s birth.

The director, who influenced a generation of film-makers with his often stark works about mortality and sexual torment, has delivered projects such as Wild Strawberries, Cries and Whispers and Fanny and Alexander during his illustrious career. He died peacefully, in his sleep, on July 30, 2007.
