KARACHI: In an attempt to safeguard their livelihood, fishermen demanded the government protect the mangrove forests that are the main source of fish food.

Hundreds of fishermen and women living on the 129-kilometre long coastline gathered at the Kaka Village, Keamari Town, on Saturday and asked the government to take action against influential people allegedly involved in felling mangrove forests. Community elders, attracted to the cause, also joined in to express their solidarity.

The fishermen blamed the deteriorating law and order situation, increasing marine pollution, illegal encroachment of beaches by landlords and the government’s indifferent attitude.

In his introductory speech, community elder Haji Abu Bakar highlighted the threats to the mangroves. “After the successful struggle to save the mangroves, we have planned to continue the campaign to safeguard the community’s rights,” he said.

Speakers also demanded the government prioritise the social development of the coastal areas where people lack basic facilities. “Of the 120 villages in Keamari Town, a large number do not have access to drinking water, sanitation, education and health facilities,” Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum chairman Muhammad Ali Shah pointed out.

“Areas in Bin Qasim Town’s coastal area are facing the same problems. Despite frequent demands, government legislators are hesitant in listening to the people’s grievances.”
