Pakistan hands dossier on human rights violations in held Kashmir to UNGA president

UNGA president expressed concern at the situation, assuring he would do everything possible to foster peace

Pakistan on Wednesday handed over a dossier pertaining to human rights violations by Indian forces in occupied-Kashmir to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) president.



Special envoys on Kashmir, Senator Mushahid Hussain and MNA Dr Shezra Mansab Ali, called on the UNGA president Peter Thomson to apprise him of the gross atrocities inflicted upon innocent Kashmiri people in the occupied valley. Pakistan's permanent representative to the UN, Dr Maleeha Lodhi, was also present on the occasion.

They briefed Thomson about the grave threat to peace and security posed by the deteriorating human rights situation in India-held Kashmir.

Dr Ali detailed the killings of innocent and peaceful Kashmiri demonstrators and injuries caused by the use of brute force by Indian forces. Senator Mushahid Hussain spoke about the war hysteria stoked by India to distract world attention from its brutal action to suppress the legitimate demand of the Kashmiri people for self-determination.



They also said that India had closed all doors to bilateral dialogue, scuttled a regional summit and at the international level, refused to implement United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions. "All this poses an imminent threat to peace and security in the region," Senator Hussain said.

The UNGA president expressed concern at the situation and assured the visiting envoys that he would do everything possible to “foster peace”.

Senator Mushahid stressed that one-fifth of humanity resides in South Asia and therefore peace and security and the future of the region should concern the international community. He bried the officials of the Department of Peace Keeping Operations (DPKO) that India had raised the temperature on the Line of Control (LoC) and this escalation exposed the region to an increasing danger to peace.



The special envoys reiterated Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's proposal to expand operations of the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) to avoid any untoward situations.

Officials of the DPKO also briefed the special envoys on the continued non-cooperation by the India which was hampering the mandated work of the UN mission. While at the same time they were highly appreciative of Pakistan’s cooperation with the Mission, and its role as one of the world’s top troop contributors to UN Peace Keeping Missions.
