Agreement inked: UAF vice-chancellor urges milk sellers to use chillers

UAF, Tetra Pak sign agreement to address challenges in dairy sector

FAISALABAD: More than 90% milk remains unprocessed in the country which is unhealthy for consumers. A mechanism should be devised to process milk by setting up small processing units in villages as it would help in generating income for the dairy farmers.

These views were expressed by University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan on Thursday.

He was speaking at a function of inking a memorandum of understanding between the university and Tetra Pak Pakistan. Dr Iqrar and Tetra Pak representative Asad Abbas signed the pact.

The professor said the agreement aimed at addressing the challenges in dairy sector. He urged milk sellers to promote the trend of chillers to preserve milk.



He said, “There is a need to  enhance collaboration between UAF and Tetra Pak, especially in the area of milk and value addition.”

Tetra Pak also handed over milk analysis machines to National Institute of Food Science and Technology. The machines will analyse the quality of milk in terms of protein, fat, freezing point, conductivity and other factors.

The MoU calls for strengthening academic and industry linkages between both institutions. They will also share resources, students and technology for research projects.

In addition, Tetra Pak will enhance the analytical capabilities of the university faculty. Besides, it will also provide opportunities to students for internships.

While highlighting details of the pact, Assad said the collaboration would bring tangible results.

He said milk quality in the county was facing issues due to non-processing and adulteration.

He pointed out the collaboration with UAF would help set the guidelines to improve milk quality.
