ISLAMABAD: An armed robber, who managed to escape from police custody, was rearrested by the police late on Monday.

Sheikh Imran was trying to rob someone in Khadda Market on Saturday when locals caught him.

ASI Tanveer Ahmed, who responded to the situation, took Imran into custody. He was taking the robber to the Aabpara police station to book him when Imran managed to grab a gun placed on the front seat of Ahmed’s car. He  opened fire on the officer and escaped.

Ahmed suffered injuries to his left cheek and shoulder and had to be admitted to the Polyclinic Hospital.

Following the incident, the Special Investigation Unit of police raided several suspected hideouts to arrest Imran. He was finally apprehended from his relative’s house in Rawalpindi on Monday.  Two of his brothers-in-law were subsequently arrested for sheltering the fugitive.

Separate cases have been registered against Imran, for looting the shop and then injuring the policeman.

The suspect was produced before a judicial magistrate on Tuesday who approved two-day physical remand in police custody.
