The corner: Sarah Habib

Yogi and former artist, Sarah Habib, welcomes us into her favourite space, her calm balcony area, lending a breath-taking view of Karachi

As we walk onto the balcony of Sarah Habib’s beautiful KDA home the first thing that catches our eye is the picturesque view of Karachi from a hill top. “I like the depth of the view,” she tells us.

Habib calls this her private space, where she escapes from daily obligations and commitments to spend some quality alone time. The area is used almost every evening, and particularly enjoyed on days when the weather is good. “My friends and I will just spread out a large carpet and relax here.” Habib describes the space as her “casual hangout and everyday downtime killer”.



We ask if any dear memories have been held in this corner and she starts to tells us about one of her most special birthdays which was unexpectedly brought out here. It was a birthday she claims, she can never forget. In terms of furniture, one of Habib’s favourite pieces is a bench, which was gifted to her by her mother. “It’s ancient, from before my kids were born. I used to keep having to take chairs in and out before, but now this just stays here,” she says.

Speaking about the interiors for the space, she shares, “I didn’t design anything, it just happened slowly.” It all started with her mother coming out here to see the space and not having anywhere to sit, which is why she gifted her the bench. Then came her Aloe Vera tree, which holds a dear spot in Habib’s heart. She says: “Nobody wants to get rid of it, they all say it has character.” She smiles as she talks about the immense sentimental value that the plant holds in her life. The first and only piece that she bought herself for the area, are the two cement planters placed in the corner, and as we glance over to the spot at which she points, we notice how over time, she has created a nice, cosy area.



Habib informs us that this corner was a product of her own imagination, and not inspired by anything or anyone. She saw the space she had and worked on it from there, adding hints of her own style to it, little by little, without an outlined design scheme in mind. This process resulted in making this her favourite spot — an escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life and the most popular hangout spot amongst her friends and family.
