KARACHI: Republic of Korea consul-general Kim Donggi and his wife, Ham Hyun Sook, opened doors of their home to more than 30 guests on Wednesday and served dishes from Korean cuisine.

The diplomat and his wife invited guests belonging to different nationalities to enjoy a meal together. Donggi said this was definitely a successful event where he, on behalf of his country, was able to introduce Korean dishes to the international guests present in Karachi.

"In Pakistan, particularly here in this city, nobody knows about the Korean culture or food," Sook said while speaking to The Express Tribune. She believes that food is a great part of their culture. "You only get to feel the real culture of another country by tasting their food and delights," she added.

At the residence, Chef Lee first prepared Cabbage Kimchi, followed by the main course Bibib Bap. Lee said she learnt to cook these dishes when she was 20-years-old from her mother and grandmother. Kimichi is a kind of pickle, while Bibib Bap, which is a staple food for Koreans, is made with vegetables, beef, and eggs, served with rice and red sauce.

Shabnum Mostari, wife of the consul-general of Bangladesh, who attended the luncheon, said she liked the Korean food and flavours. Speaking about the variety in Pakistani food, Mostari said she has deep love for kebabs and naan. Mostari added that she got to eat these when she came to the country 15 years ago.

The Indonesian consul-general's wife, Wati Santoso, was also among the guests. Referring to the dishes, she said the food was good, adding that Korean food is actually a healthy diet.

On the other hand, Noor Haironi Binti NGadirin, from the Consulate General of Malaysia, was all praise for the improved security situation in Karachi. "I love travelling around city. You can find me in the busy streets of Tariq Road! So much has improved in Karachi security wise," NGadirin said.

Speaking about the Pakistani cuisine, Sook said she loves Biryani while chicken curry is her all-time favourite. "On Eid, people here have a special dessert made of vermicelli. I just love it with or without milk," she added.
