PESHAWAR: Local body by-elections were held in seven districts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa on Tuesday for constituencies that had fallen vacant owing to multiple reasons.

A total of 222 candidates across the province were contesting for 35 vacant seats in the district, tehsil/town and village/neighborhood councils in the seven districts. The polling was held in Peshawar, Swabi, Karak, Tank, Abbottabad, Buner, and Lower Dir districts.

A tough contest is expected between Tehreek-e-Insaf and Jamat-e-Islami for the town councilor seat in Union Council Kaneza and for the district councilor seat in union council Pajagi of Peshawar.

The polling started at 8am and ended by 5pm without any breaks.

Low turnout was witnessed during the early hour which according to the locals was because the election was held on a working day.

Police contingents were deployed to avoid any untoward situation. As many as 38 presiding officers, 99 assistant presiding officers, and 99 polling officers were deployed by the Election Commission of Pakistan.
