England dent South Africa’s hopes

May 09, 2010

Kevin Pietersen inspired England to a 39-run win over South Africa in Barbados while virtually assuring them a place in the semi-finals.

England’s win also keeps Pakistan’s chances of progressing alive as a defending champions’ win over South Africa tomorrow and a New Zealand defeat at the hands of England will result in the second qualifier decided on net run-rate. Earlier, Pietersen hit a 33- ball 53 to help England post 168 for seven. In reply, South Africa succumbed to spin and were dismissed for 128.
