MULTAN: A gifted student who was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm a month after he sat his Intermediate papers has posthumously secured the top distinction in the examinations held by Multan Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education this year.

Unfortunately, Waqas Rauf, a resident of Vehari district, will not be able to celebrate his success. Rauf died of brain hemorrhage on July 11.

Multan board results showed that Rauf had obtained 1,013 marks in the general science group and  clinched first position in the board examinations.

Rauf’s parents were invited at the prize distribution ceremony held at Multan Arts Council on Saturday. Waqas’s father Haji Niaz – a retired army man – could not control his emotions when he was called onto the stage to receive the medal and certificate of his late son.

Talking to The Express Tribune, Niaz said his son had made him proud even after his death but they could no longer celebrate his success. “This is a very tough time for the whole family. Sadly, death came earlier to Waqas than success,” he added.

He said Waqas was a hard working and brave student, who did not let his disease come in the way of his studies. “His disease was diagnosed one month after the exam. During the exam, he used to complain about the symptoms of brain hemorrhage like headache, weakness in the body and numbness,” he said.

“Even with his ailing health, he used to study the whole night,” he added.
