Basant ban retained by Punjab government

The Punjab government on Sunday decided to retain a ban on kite flying and Basant Festival in Lahore.

LAHORE: The Punjab government on Sunday decided to retain a ban on kite flying and Basant Festival in Lahore.

According to a handout, the ban has been retained for the protection of life and property of people.

Earlier, the Kite flying association had announced to celebrate Basant on the February 27-28, and had asked the government to reconsider the ban. The Punjab government, after considerable consultations, refused to lift the ban.

The kite flying association has refused to comment on the decision, saying it has not been informed about the ban officially.

The Punjab government and police say strict action will taken against those who violate the ban.

sunny | 13 years ago | Reply goverment says basant cannot be celebrate bc of its celebration people were accidentely died and told the figure of 18 in 3 years i have a opinion that in 14 august celebration large amount of young people were also died accidentely so the goverment will band the 14 august celebration that the only way to stop these incident on our national festivals i think goverment should look on there self and simply agree that it was there mistake that the plastic thread come into market and goverment didnot took action on it and now they simply run away from their duties

As a doctor, I would be concerned about injuries by kite flying, but surely a few common sense precautions and directives could have solved it. I may be ignorant of any politics behind it but it would pain me if this was because it is percieved to be a hindu/ sikh or Indian festival. I am 60 years old, but the act of flying a kite is so exhilirating that even at this age, when we were in Kerala 2 years ago, I was fighting with my son over who can fly it better.

I think it's really a bad decision.Punjab government only played the political stunt. Basant is really a good event but few politics parties used for political purpose. I think basant will be open when Punjab government will be led down otherwise there is no hope from the shahbaz sharif government.
