Big, fat, juicy, rosy and ripe – peaches are abundant this season and it is almost impossible to keep yourself from getting tempted. It is safe to say that they have rightfully taken the throne after mangoes. Not only are they delightfully tasty, can be used for whipping up delicious desserts and even savoury dishes, they also offer countless health benefits. That, is the definition of a win-win situation.

With something that already tastes divine, you hardly ever need more reasons to dig right in. As compiled from medicalnewstoday.com, here are some rare benefits of including peaches in your daily diet.

1) They are known cancer combatants

Cancer cells form in the body in the presence of free radicals. A research conducted by Texas A&M University, published in Science Daily, shows that peaches have the potential to combat even the most aggressive forms of breast cancer without harming any normal, healthy cells in the process. The research showed that cancer cells died after being exposed to peach and plum extracts in the laboratory.

2) They fight obesity-related diabetes

Another research conducted by the institute proved that compounds present in stone fruit effectively act against a number of metabolic conditions that pose serious health threats. “In recent years, obesity has become a major concern in society due to the health problems associated with it,” said Dr Luis Cisneros-Zevallos, associate professor at Texas A&M University. “Our studies have shown that stone fruits like peaches, plums and nectarines, have bioactive compounds that can potentially fight the syndrome. Our work indicates that phenolic compounds present in these fruits have anti-obesity, anti-inflammatory and anti-diabetic properties in different cell lines.”

3) They are a rich source of Vitamin C

Also known as L-ascorbic acid, vitamin C is a nutrient essential for the human body. Peaches are rich sources of this anti-oxidant and work miracles in restoring skin vitality, improve texture and reverse damage inflicted by pollution, UV radiation and signs of aging. The nutrient also promotes formation of collagen, which is basically the support system of the skin.

4) They prevent age-related macular degeneration

A research conducted by the Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital shows that people who consume a higher intake of stone fruit are less likely to develop age-related macular degenerative disease. The macula is the portion of the eye that provides us with central vision. Three or more servings of peach per day can keep your risk of developing the condition at bay.

5) They regulate and reduce cholesterol levels

Low Density Lipo-proteins (LDL) are considered as the ‘bad’ cholesterols of the body that contribute to the development of cardiovascular diseases. A study conducted at the Vanderbilt Medical School proved that the fiber, ascorbate, potassium and choline content present in peaches can efficiently lower risks of ischemic heart diseases.
