The session at Books and Beans was organised by Tasweer Ghar, a platform for photographers and filmmakers to brainstorm and share expertise in new methods of creating artwork involving photography. Rabbania Shirjeel, who runs the platform, told The Express Tribune that the two photographers were interested in the same kind of process for photography. “They are interested in filmmaking and film photography. This involves experimenting with analogue photography… they combine and design analogue photography to come up with artistic results,” Sharjeel said.
Zubair, a graphic design student, says she develops images that are rather challenging in today’s world. “My work is mainly about film photography.” “Old pictures fascinate me. I experiment with various patterns and exposures to produce the desired effect,” says Zubair who uses 35-mm film for capturing images. “Getting pictures developed a few months after I capture these brings me an element of surprise. That is why film is my favorite medium.”
“Even when I am using a digital camera, I try and give the images an ‘old’ effect, the artist says. Apart from creating images on film, Zubair says, she manually manipulates the art pieces.
Zubair says juxtaposing is the term she would use if asked to explain her style of work in one word. “I create art by merging various images,” she says. Being Natasha’s senior at the NCA, Amjad talks about their shared interest in image making. He says his work is mostly associated with the impression of being vintage. “I focus on capturing stillness and elements of mystery in images.”
“The pictures I take have to have something that viewers might find creepy,” he says.
