The Karachi-based two political parties have been engaged in a war of words since March 3 this year when former Karachi mayor Mustafa Kamal announced to part ways with MQM after developing differences with its supremo Altaf Hussain.
The clash started as two people each from the rival groups engaged in an angry exchange of words in the prison cell, media reports suggested.
Switching loyalties: Five MQM leaders join PSP
The situation worsened when other inmates joined the fight to support their respective affiliation, leaving three people injured.
However, a jail official told The Express Tribune that those involved in the scuffle were not political activists.
“There has been no clash between the MQM and PSP. It was between two inmates over some issue but soon both of them were overpowered by jail guards,” the official added.
He also denied an aggravation or crowd of the inmates on the scene, adding that the two inmates starting the fight suffered minor injuries were shifted to their respective wards after preliminary medical aid.
MQM’s Asif Hasnain joins Pak Sarzameen Party
Several prominent leaders belonging to MQM have become a part of Kamal's PSP, such as lawmaker Asif Hasnain who joined the former mayor on August 28.
Similarly, on May 29, five local government representatives elected on the ticket of MQM in December switched their loyalties to PSP.
