ISLAMABAD: Local manufacturers have welcomed Commerce Minister Khurram Dastgir Khan’s assurance to a parliamentary committee that the government is in the process of completing the National Tariff Commission (NTC) by appointing its members within one month.

A meeting of the NTC stakeholders was held on Thursday in which a majority of the domestic producers whose cases were pending before the tariff commission participated.

They expressed deep concern and apprehension over the state of affairs at the NTC since 2009. They suggested that the government should appoint members of the commission without any delay as the domestic industry was facing huge losses due to dumping of products by different countries.

The participants also requested the minister to take appropriate measures to dispel the impression about a rift between the commerce secretary and the NTC chairman.

Leading domestic industries believe that investments worth billions of rupees would be saved and encouraged in different sectors after timely completion of investigations by the NTC. The stakeholders decided to join hands to form a forum in order to raise collective voice for the constitution and sustainability of this institution.
