I will contest the next election: Musharraf

ISLAMABAD: Former military ruler Pervez Musharraf has unveiled his plans to return to active politics, saying that he will contest the next general election in Pakistan.

Musharraf made the announced at a gathering of his supporters in Islamabad by teleconference. “I have decided to take part in Pakistan’s politics and I will contest the next elections, irrespective of whether they are mid-term or ends term elections,” he said in his brief address. A number of cases have been filed against Musharraf since the Supreme Court (SC) declared that the emergency imposed by him in 2007 was unconstitutional and illegal.

Musharraf said that he has received a lot of support from Pakistanis living abroad. “The Pakistanis I have met abroad have told me I should return to Pakistan,” he said. He remained secretive about his future plans saying that he would present his vision for Pakistan’s progress and the direction the country should take at a suitable time. “If you are with me, I will not let you down,” he added.

Musharraf asked his supporters to attend the Pasdare- Pakistan gathering on May 8 at the Islamabad Press Club. “Sitting on the sidelines of history never changed anything, become a part of positive change in Pakistan,” he added. Musharraf’s supporters have also launched a move to register a new party, The All Pakistan Muslim League.

Fahad | 14 years ago | Reply This is certainly a glimmer of hope for Pakistan's future! Pakistan is in a serious situation which noone is capable of handling except Mr. P. Musharraf. What he did in his 9 years, no leader can or would be able to do in Pakistan. People who state negative blindfolded comments of the lal masjid case, and other cases which they don't even know properly about, they are the ones especially bought merely for a few pennys, nothing else. It's sad to see that Pakistan can't have people such as Imran Khan notably as leaders because people of their calibure lay foundations with honesty and integrity for their country, rather than some people who serve almost a decade in Jail and others who are filled with total corruption, get the open liberty to serve as what most senseless people think, the great leaders of pakistan. On these basis, atleast to save this country, what it desperately requires are the services of a man who developed pakistan positively in the 9 years in terms of International ties, resumption of cricketing ties with India and developing a significant Nuclear Arsenal (being probably the only thing holding Pakistan as a dangerous force in the eyes of its enemy). Therefore, as a solemn request to many foolish people who are writing here and think negatively about Mr. Musharraf, spare a moment of thought, and make sure its a sensible one. Welcome back Mr. Pervez Musharraf!

Umair | 14 years ago | Reply Former generals have become leaders in countries such as Indonesia so there is nothing odd if Musharaff stands for the election. I personally would root for him. As would many others. However other visionary leaders like Benazir and Zulfiqar Bhutto kept the country above everything else but in the end they had to pay the ultimate price for their patriotism. The question that arises therefore is will the entrenched powerful group of Pakistan accept Musharaff as a leader? If the rhetoric of the vengeful Sharif brothers is anything to go by, most likely not. Which is why if I were Musharaff I would keep myself away from the country's politics.

But no one can deny from many deeds he accomplished for the betterment of the country and especially for the poor class of our bad-luck nation. He tried his best to upgrade the education level of the country which is the only backbone for the bright future of any nation. He is the only person in the history of our poor Pakistan that brought Kashmir issue to the level of decision. He is the man who let the cruel and barbaric ruler down in Kabul. He is the person who gave us an educated Parliament. He is the person who gave us freedom from illiterate ministers for at least one time in the history of our country. He is the person who gave respect and dignity to the builders of our nation, the teachers. He is the person who let everyone to speak freely and openly in the form of unbanned media. He is the person who dare to face every situation boldly and was able to make mostly correct and better decision in favor of Pakistan at the occasions where no one, I personally think, among the present leadership could possible do so. We have been bounded with $54 Billions, upcoming generation has been pledged by our handsome leaders. If Musharrafs' vision is a bit acceptable & matches our psycho-graphic scenario, we'll welcome him. But again one thing lags, and thats public at large support & afterwards plan. junaid | 14 years ago | Reply we can not say any 100percent thing about any pakistani politicain....but...pakistan has made peogress in musharf period and at that time pakistan was not in that condition in which we are in present.i think he should come forward...lal masjid and bugti matter is just seen from one side image no one thinks about the ammo and blasting matrial which was found from that masjid.......but so sever action like using phosphorus bombs was mushsarufs fault. i think the politicians like ppp and pml these are sucking country like leach from years noting is invisible from nation so why musharufss these mistakes which can be counted on finger tips are given as a logic to ban his entrance in Pakistani politics.and if you talk about lal masjid people they were haveing ammo in hands but no body thinks about zardari and pml.they are killing the economy of same children and youth by there courption......stop party following...thinkkk.my comment will fail to satisfy those ppp and pml followers cause of personal benifits,realtions, or any expected benefit by there any MNA....he is said to be a dictator who forcefully ruled the govt.but my question is that why petrol was not 75p/l .why the price of automobiles and other utillites were at satble level.and the energy units which were working at that time...suddenly dropped.no.our neighboring uncle he is working in a federal govt department is not happy with musharuf because he introduced finger print detecting attendance system in offices so he has to go on time and leave at his time.some people in my street aged about 45 to 50 ,i have listened them saying that we dont want to work on workstation because we don't understand it and we are not able to operate it.that is wrong policy by mean musharaf to eliminate paper work system.but i tell you those people which i have listened saying that,were sent to computer courses with ta/da and they spent that time on home resting.And there are many many more examples if we think positively without bias.Common people have nothing to do with what is happing in parties and in Parliament,a mazdoor doesn't know that what is 58/2B and what is going wrong with constitution.The hell he knows that flour and sugar is no more available and he has to feed his children which are waiting their father to come back with 350 rupees to feed them.my last point can this govt give atlest one commodities price on that level which was in musharuff period...........

Sarah | 14 years ago | Reply I think since Gen Musharaf has left we have become extremely conservative. Our society is looked upon as bein extremly backward where women and children have no rights. Musharaf at least tried to being us back up by challenging the Hudood Ordinance. I now live in London and when I compare Karachi to London I just think we are centuaries apart. Karachi is so underdeveloped. When I left Pakistan (during Gen Mus.'s rule the industry in Karachi had started to flourish, now I am bing told unemployment is at its peak. There are so many MBAs who do not have a job! The whole economy of Pakistan is going downwards. I was educated in Karachi and was told democracy is the right way. However I prefer dictatorship under Gen Musharaf than the so called democracy under PML & PPP. I just want to say I love Pakistan with the whole of my heart and want gen Mus. to come back.

All the major political parties dont win seats cos of their charismatic leaders or agenda. They only win because they put the strongest regional candidates up, who are mostly the outlaws and ghundas of the area. If Musharraf comes into politics he would be another Imran Khan or Asghar Khan - who cant even win their own seats. If he wants to succeed in securing any power he has to align with the most corrupt of the local candidates, who will blackmail him forever to stay in power.

Danish | 14 years ago | Reply Many people on this forum has expressed about english speaking, kids of rich daddies who made millions while the poor weeped. The poor in this country actually likes to sit in there homes and get paid (Benazir Income support fund). Musharraf and Shaukat Aziz created opportuntities for everyone including the rich or poor. Lets take only one example as follows: The media was made independent, suddenly many news channel came up like a mushroom growth. Each TV channel of a good standing must hire atleast 300 to 500 employee's, buy computers, cars, rent buildings, construct offices etc etc. How many lives become associated to one field where everyone gets a job and finds supporting his family. As the employer benefits from the above cycle, the employee reaps the advantage. Employer will raise wages or salaires when he can earn money and when he will see to find work force he must pay more. If the Employer has no business why would he hire work force, why not just keep 1 person to do the work of 3 people to save his cost and money. Right now in the present government can you give me an example of one field which had been de-regualrized and people were hired or a cycle was created to benefit millions of poor of Pakistan. People talk about Lal Masjid, have you heard in any capital of the world Burqa wielding, stick laden women walking and kidnapping foreigners and trying to establish there own writ. How many times did Bugti blow up the train tracks or the Gas pipelines in winters, he is a martyre now because he blew up the infrastructure or created problems in winters for our children. Decisions in case of Lal Masjid and Bugti were bold decisions. The president or the Prime minister had to establish writ of the government. The people who died are outlaws not martyrs. There is a wide difference between people who disrupt law and order and who safe guard the interests of there country. Why not we give Sitara-e-Imtiaz to every thief, rapist, crook etc in the country cause right now those people are running the government. This country makes martyr out of thieves. Twice Benazir was elected, Twice the Sharif brothers were elected did they ever do anything for the betterment of this country. Except for crying and begging money from IMF or World Bank they had nothing else to do. All they did was to deposit the Loans from IMF and World Bank into there Swiss accounts, London Accounts or make factories in Jeddah where today 70% of the work force is Indian. The sharif brothers do not want to hier pakistani nationals to work in there factories cause its easier to trust an indian then a pakistani to run the production in there factories. Unless we fix our short term memory syndrome we cant move ahead. If you sit down draw a chart, find the pro's and con's of each leader then you will find that actually the person who lead us from the front is the one who deserves to come back and lead this country again from the front. Democracy means you have to find and test people, if they dont do to make your life better change them thats the best revenge. You dont go and vote again to the same people who you trusted and they betrayed your trust. Musharraf is a choice we have to take sooner or later because he is a hope and certainly during his time things became much better. The country started moving forward and we were proud to stand up and say we are Pakistani's. Pakistan First!

By far his time was better than any other. Ppl talk about his mistake in CJP case, i think the present CJP has harmed Pakistan in more ways than 1, what happened to our so called national asset Pak Steel? (root cause of the stand off), it has gone down like a ton of bricks when it could have been sold off. CJP's action alone has damaged the FDI flows (approx 3-4 bn per year) and plus the international investments in the markets. Thank you Mr.CJP for all this....... As far as BB assassination, she came in for the money, did Musharraf tell her to get out of the car? Was she not warned not to hold the rally? Thz brainwashed ppl think she or the Shariff brother care about us, no sir, they only care about their properties (abroad), their bank balances & their narrow vision. He has much to be answerable for starting with the murder of BB and Nawab Bugti. He cannot escape being held accountable as the all-powerful President at the time. The bucks stops at his desk. As for the IMF, perhaps the writer above forgets that he DID turn to the IMF to bail Pakistan out in the context of the three-year PRGF program.

KK | 14 years ago | Reply I seriously don't understand when People of Pakistan will open their eyes and heads and realize which leader of Pakistan has been more beneficial in history. It's one thing to blame dictatorship for being strict and another calling its rule as an"iron fist", when it was FAR from it. Agreed Musharraf made some big mistakes and the biggest one was the chief justice one, but he didn't do as much harm or corruption in 9 years of presidency than 2 years of current PPP government and previous governments of PML-N. I would definitely support the guy just because of the fact that the guy is honest and makes an honest effort in keeping things together. Also he is the best person to represent Pakistan abroad and the best person to send out on debates. For reference, i suggest people watch all hid videos on youtube where he is grilled by the Indian media for an hour. I would also support him now because he will be a civilian coming through a new political party. And we all know how badly we need some good new political parties. His upcoming parties chairman, Barrister Saif Ali, is also a very straight forward person. And i rather support a political party who is honest and straight with its public rather than arm twisters, tongues twisters and a bunch of liers.

His present supporters consist of a small clutch among the English-speaking elite of Pakistan who profited under his rule. These days even his erstwhile chumchas of the Musharraf-created PML(Q) have deserted him. Millions of Pakistanis hold Musharraf directly responsible for the murders of Benazir Bhutto, Akbar Bugti and numerous other Pakistanis. There was a time when this bully thought he could do anything he wanted and was completely beyond the reach of the law. I personally don't believe he has the moral courage to return to Pakistan and face the charges that will be laid against him. The fellow is not only chronically full of hot air but a bombastic coward as well.

What was it that he was going to say that scared them to the extent that a legal meeting could not be held. How do people expect him to come back and face the courts when the system is rigged to lean towards the people in power? Let's face it, these times are not the best of time us Pakistani's have seen. I heard on the news last night that load shedding has been ended, I have faced power breakdowns twice already since morning and it's only mid day. The decisions taken by the Musharraf government were truly for the betterment of Pakistan as a nation and not one individual. It's impossible to please the ENTIRE nation with every decision and very wise of the government to put Pakistan first. The answers to questions regarding BB's case, Kalabagh Dam, Handling the US situation post 9/11 have been issues by the government officials and it's up to you to keep a balanced head and review the facts. Please don't believe everything you hear on the news, always question the source. As an example I would like to remind you all that the largest media companies in North America are owned by just three corporations. How do you expect a balanced view when a handful of elite are controlling information that is passed on to you. The same is the case in Pakistan, the news leans towards the people in power and everyone knows this and it has been happening from the days of Zia and beyond. Iinstead of projecting a positive image of Pakistan (atleast to it's own citizens) the media is always bringing down people in order to raise their 'ratings' and procure advertising rupees. WE ARE THE NATION! if we keep letting these news channels destroy our reputation, no amount of partying and projecting ourselves as moderates and liberals in front of the west will help the nation (maybe a few individuals). Educate yourselves and make an honest and informed decision rather than being spoonfed atrocious lies that only insult your own intelligence. Compare figures, compare public opinion and take into account both sides and for your own sake, leave your emotions at home!

How he effectively he keep them under his thumb remains the big question. Ideally he should bring along competent people working in private sectors.

I hope that this time General (R) Pervez Musharaf will not come into power by sitting on the shoulders of Chaudhry’s of Gujrat, as Chaudhry brothers has let him down in the previous elections. Re-entry of General (R) Pervez Musharraf is quite possible, but he has to change his mind set. People do not want to see any more dictatorial rule in the country. This time General Musharraf will be contesting election as a civilian and not as a military dictator. General Musharraf’s All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) has to play a positive role and people will only support him until All Pakistan Muslim League would remain as All Pakistan Muslim League and will not change into All Pakistan Musharraf’s League. I had an opportunity to meet General (R) Pervez Musharraf who is quite competent and down to earth man but the main problem is of his close associates who failed to guide him in the proper direction. A suspension order of Chief Justice of Pakistan was the biggest blunder which General (R) Pervez Musharraf has made during his political career. Abrogation of constitution was another mistake which led to General (R) Pervez Musharraf’s downfall. General (R) Pervez Musharraf should first change the mind set of people of Pakistan by elaborating as what positive steps he is going take which will solve the problems of a common man. He should also clarify the under what circumstances he was unable to increase the generation of power supply which has plunged the country into darkness. What will be his policies in respect to the World Bank and IMF incase if he comes back into power? Will he be taking loan from these two financial institutions? Is he capable to rule the country in a similar manner as Mahatir bin Mohamad ruled Malaysia? Can he bring down the inflation, electricity tariff, water, gas and other utility charges so that poor should live with dignity and honour or would he been taking dictation and allow IMF and the World Bank to rule the country? Is he capable to increase the per capita income of a common man and make annual budget according to the aspiration of millions of people in Pakistan? Can he end the corruption from the country which went unabated during his tenure?
